Stainless Steel Restoration, Repair and Scratch Removal

Stainless steel looks permanent until it is scratched. Elevator cabs, entrance doors, paneled walls, door jambs, handrails, and appliance fronts pick up scuffs, key marks, and graffiti, and once the grain is broken the damage catches the light from across a lobby. We restore stainless steel back to a uniform finish rather than replacing the panel, which is a fraction of the cost and avoids matching a new panel to old neighbors.

Scratch Removal and Regraining

Stainless steel does not have a coating to touch up. Its appearance comes from a directional grain worked into the surface, so a repair means re-establishing that grain across the damaged area and blending it out into the panel. Our technicians hand-work the surface with progressively finer abrasives until the repair no longer reads as a repair.

Whatever the existing finish is, mirrored, brushed, or satin, our regraining process eliminates surface scratches and greatly reduces heavy ones. Where a scratch is deep enough to have removed metal it can be reduced but not erased, and we will tell you which of those you are looking at before we start. We then apply a clear coating to protect against future scratching.

Stainless Steel Renewal for Buildings in Service

Most of this work happens in occupied buildings, so it is planned around the people using them. Elevator interiors are done cab by cab. Lobby paneling and entrance doors are worked in sections, overnight where the schedule demands it. Nothing is removed from the building and nothing is shipped out.

Renewal on a maintenance cycle costs far less than reacting to damage, because light surface wear is blended out quickly while deep damage needs the whole panel brought back into uniformity. Buildings that put stainless on a schedule spend less over the life of the finish. That is the thinking behind our architectural metal maintenance program.

Same-Day Vandalism and Graffiti Removal

Stainless steel paneled walls and elevator cabs and doors are common targets for scratched graffiti. At Metal Man Restoration we offer immediate vandalism removal, same day or overnight, across the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, so that a defaced lobby is not left for tenants and visitors to look at.

Property managers, superintendents, and building owners are the people who call us for this, usually first thing in the morning. Call (914) 662-4218 describe the damage, and we will tell you what can be done that day.

Types of Stainless Steel Finishes

Matching the existing finish is the whole job, so it helps to know which one you have. Listed below are the standard finishes with their proper terminology.

  • #3 Finish: Sometimes called a grain finish. The abrasive size used to obtain this result ranges from 120 to 220 grit. Metal Man Restoration typically utilizes 180 grit as the final step in a #3 finish.
  • #4 Finish: Sometimes called a brushed or satin finish. 320 grit is typically the last step in obtaining this finish. This is the most common architectural finish.
  • #7 Finish: A smooth buffed finish with a very bright appearance. No attempt is made to remove all pitting and imperfections in the base metal.
  • #8 Finish: A mirror bright finish, smooth and returning clear reflections. This is the most demanding finish to repair invisibly.

Common Questions About Stainless Steel Restoration

These are the questions property managers and building owners ask us most before booking stainless work.

Can deep scratches in stainless steel be removed completely?

Light and moderate scratches come out fully. A scratch deep enough to have displaced metal can be greatly reduced and blended so it no longer catches the eye, but claiming it disappears entirely would not be honest. We assess the depth first and tell you which result to expect.

Is restoring stainless steel cheaper than replacing the panel?

Almost always, and the bigger saving is often in matching. A new panel has a factory finish that will not sit right next to panels that have aged, so replacing one frequently leads to replacing several. Restoring brings the damaged area back to the neighbors it already has.

How quickly can you respond to vandalism?

Same day or overnight across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Scratched graffiti in elevator cabs and lobby paneling is the most common emergency call we take.

Will the repaired area match the rest of the panel?

That is the standard we work to. We identify the existing finish, match the grit sequence, and work the grain in the same direction, then blend outward, so there is no visible edge to the repair.

Do you have to remove anything from the building?

No. Stainless work is done in place, including elevator interiors and lobby paneling, and it is scheduled around the building rather than the other way round.
