We understand the value of preserving the original character of historic buildings, which is why we offer restoration services for these durable windows.

The Steel Casement Restoration Process

Metal Man has developed a detailed process for restoring steel sash and frames, ensuring that every step is carried out with the utmost care and precision:

On-Site Review

The first step in the restoration process is to conduct an on-site survey of each unit’s condition and determine the best course of action for restoring the window. Metal Man marks each unit in the field, corresponding to our electronic scheduling program, to expedite production and ensure the proper corrective action is implemented.

Lead Paint Removal

Removing the many layers of lead-based paint is the next step, as it allows us to determine the actual condition of the window unit and prepare it for further restoration. Metal Man uses dip tanks with a liquid stripper as the most effective means of paint removal; it is less abrasive than other methods and can handle sashes up to 8’0″ x 8’0″.

Repair Structural Joints

Steel windows often rust at critical structural joints, compromising their structural integrity. Metal Man artisans will weld new joints to regain the original structural strength of the sash and frame members.

Replace Deteriorated Components

If only specific sash components are damaged, Metal Man can replace only those parts rather than disposing of the entire unit. We often see lower sash rails and horizontal mullions exposed to water to the extent that the steel is no longer sound. The Metal Man artisans fabricate replacement steel components using the same profiles as the existing parts and weld them into the frame or sash. We also maintain an inventory of parts and pieces from other completed jobs.

Finish Sand

The Metal Man craftsmen use a combination of belt sanders, orbital sanders, finish sanders, and wire brushes to create a finished surface on the steel casement window. Hand sanding is also extensively used to achieve a smooth finish.

All welded joints and epoxy-treated areas are sanded to a smooth finish to best achieve the original profile of the window unit. We also have state-of-the-art sandblasting booths to remove any final rust and existing paint.

Glazing

The Metal Man team typically uses either an interior or exterior glazing bead or putty glazing, depending upon the style of the steel window. We set the glass in a bed of silicone to provide a tight seal or sometimes use glazing putty, depending on the casement window.

The glazing pocket is prepared with a rust-inhibiting primer manufactured by Tnemec to prevent future oxidation. Metal Man takes excellent care to prevent incompatibilities between the primer and the glazing compound.

Finish Stain or Paint

Our painting crew can match any desired finish for your restored steel casement window. We prefer to use Tnemec paints for a stabilizing primer, as they are known to be the finest in the industry.
