Terrazzo Floor Restoration

Terrazzo wears well for decades and then starts to look tired all at once. It is porous, so foot traffic and spills both take a toll, and the aggregate makes damage more obvious than it would be on a plain stone floor. We restore terrazzo in Mount Vernon and across Westchester County.

What Goes Wrong With Terrazzo

Open pores take in whatever is spilled on them. Traffic lanes dull faster than the rest of the floor, so the wear shows as a path rather than an even fade. Chips and cracks tend to appear at thresholds and around fixings.

Cleaning, Filling and Polishing

We clean the floor, fill chips and cracks, and polish out scratches and dull spots. Repairs are color matched and blended into the surrounding surface, which matters more on terrazzo than on plain stone because the aggregate pattern has to carry through the repair.

Terrazzo and Travertine

Travertine has the same porosity problem in a different form. Where a travertine floor has open holes, we can convert it to a filled, easy to clean surface rather than leaving pores that collect dirt.

Finishing and Sealing

As with marble, the finish is chosen for the room and the traffic rather than by default, then sealed. We will tell you which cleaners are safe on it, because the wrong product undoes the work slowly.

Common Questions About Terrazzo

Can chipped terrazzo be repaired invisibly?

Repairs are color matched and blended in. On a patterned aggregate a close match is realistic; a perfect one is not always possible, and we will say so before we start.

Is terrazzo restoration cheaper than replacement?

Almost always, and the original floor is usually better made than what would replace it.

Do you work on commercial floors?

Yes. Lobbies and entries are common terrazzo locations, and we mask and contain the work so the space stays usable.
