The Steel Casement Restoration Process

On-Site Review

Lead Paint Removal
Removing the many layers of lead paint is the next step, as this allows us to determine the actual condition of the window unit and prepare it for further restoration steps. Metal Man utilizes dip tanks with a liquid stripper as the most effective means of paint removal, which is less abrasive than other methods and can handle sash up to 8’0″ x 8’0″.
Repair Structural Joints

Hand sanding is also carried out extensively to achieve a smooth finish. All welded joints and epoxy-treated areas are sanded to a smooth finish best to achieve the original profile of the window unit. We also have state-of-the-art sandblasting booths to remove any final rust and existing paint.
Glazing
The Metal Man team typically uses either an interior or exterior glazing bead or putty glazing, depending upon the style of the steel window. We set the glass in a bed of silicone to provide a tight seal or sometimes use glazing putty, depending on the casement window. The glazing pocket is prepared with a rust-inhibiting primer manufactured by Tnemec to prevent future oxidation. Metal Man takes excellent care to prevent incompatibilities between the primer and the glazing compound.
Finish Stain or Paint
