Cast Iron Radiator Restoration in Jersey City, NJ

A row house that was subdivided and then reunified tends to have a strange mix of radiators: some original to the house, some added when a floor became its own apartment, some from a different building entirely. They rarely match, and by the time somebody notices, the plasterwork is already done. Restoring the set to one finish is the cheapest way to make a house that has been through all that read as a single house again.

The converted industrial buildings around the Powerhouse Arts District and along the older waterfront blocks kept their heating iron too, and in those the radiators are often larger and plainer than a row house would have. Plain is not the same as uninteresting. Stripped back and finished in a metallic or polished finish, an oversized industrial radiator tends to look deliberate rather than left over.

What Radiator Restoration Involves

Stripping comes first and it is total: back to bare iron, cleaned, then inspected. That order matters on a house full of mismatched radiators, because until the paint is gone you cannot tell which castings are actually comparable. Repairs follow where they are worthwhile, and we are straight about the ones that are not. Finishes range from solid colors to metallic and polished work done in our shop.

Row house work means stairs, and the radiators are heavy before they are drained and merely awkward afterwards. We handle removal and return ourselves, protect the staircase and floors on the way through, and agree both dates in advance so a contractor’s schedule is not left waiting on us.

The same way it works anywhere else: we collect. The radiators are drained, disconnected and taken to our shop in Mount Vernon, restored, and delivered back for reinstallation. The bridge crossing is our problem, not yours, and nothing is shipped or freighted.

My radiators do not match each other. Can that be fixed?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call. Restoring them to a single consistent finish makes a mismatched set read as intentional, even where the castings themselves are from different periods.

Is it cheaper to just buy new radiators?

Rarely, if you want cast iron. New cast iron radiators are expensive, and modern panel radiators do not match the look or the heat behavior of what is already there. The existing castings are usually sound under the paint.

Is the old paint hazardous?

Assume lead-based paint under the later coats on anything of this age. That is why the stripping happens at our shop rather than in your house.

Can you work to a renovation schedule?

Yes. Tell us when the radiators need to be out and when they need to be back, and we will work to it or tell you honestly if the dates are not achievable.

Do you do whole buildings?

Yes, including phased work so a building is not without heat everywhere at once.
