How Wrought Iron Restoration Works: The Short Answer
Wrought iron railings and ornamental ironwork are restored by stripping the paint to bare metal, assessing the iron that is revealed, then straightening bent sections, forging or splicing broken ones, and rebuilding pitted areas before priming and repainting. Wrought Iron or Cast Iron? The Answer Changes the Repair
The two metals look similar under a century of paint and behave nothing alike.
Cast iron is melted and poured into molds, then bolted together in sections, which is why it carries deep, repeating ornament. Wrought iron is worked slowly with heat and pressure, shaped by forging, and joined with rivets or by fusing the pieces, according to the National Park Service guidance on iron fence repair. Wrought iron is lighter, simpler, and more delicate in its detail.
That difference decides the repair. Wrought iron is ductile, so a bent rail or baluster can usually be straightened with the right tools. Most older buildings carry both. A stoop might have cast newels with wrought infill, or a fence with cast posts carrying forged pickets. Identifying which is which comes first, because treating wrought iron like cast iron wastes money, and treating cast iron like wrought iron breaks it.
What Paint Is Actually Hiding
An iron railing rarely announces its condition. It just gets repainted.
Every new coat traps what is underneath. Moisture sits against the metal, corrosion continues under the film, and the surface still looks acceptable from the sidewalk. By the time paint is visibly failing, the iron has usually been working on its own problems for years.
At The Admaston, a pre-war building at 251 West 89th Street built between 1910 and 1911, we found exactly that. The wrought iron entrance had never been restored. Our analysis found many layers of paint going down to the original coat, and underneath it rotted areas and deep pitting where corrosion had worn through the original iron. From the street, it read as tired paint.
This is why the order of operations matters. Stripping first, then assessing, is the only honest way to price iron that has been painted over for a century.
How Ornamental Ironwork Fails
Failures repeat across buildings, and they show up in a handful of predictable places.
Embedments. Where iron enters stone, brick, or concrete, water collects and rust expands. The expanding corrosion cracks the surrounding masonry, which lets in more water. On stoops and area railings this is the most common structural failure we see.
Joints and connections. Riveted and fused joints loosen as corrosion works into the seam. A railing can feel solid at the top rail and be completely loose where it meets the base.
Section loss and pitting. Corrosion eats into the profile itself. Light pitting is cosmetic. Deep pitting removes structural material, and that is a repair, not a paint job.
Impact damage. Ornamental iron gets hit by ladders, deliveries, moving trucks, and snow removal. Bent scrollwork and displaced balusters are usually straightforward on wrought iron.

The Restoration Process, Step by Step
The sequence below is what a full restoration looks like on a railing, gate, fence, or entrance surround.
1. Survey and documentation. Photograph and measure the assembly before anything moves. Note what is original, what was altered, and which elements are missing. On a designated building this record matters later for approvals.
2. Tagging and controlled disassembly. Where sections come to the shop, each piece is tagged so it returns to the same position. Ornamental iron is rarely symmetrical in practice, even when it was designed to be.
3. Paint removal. Every layer comes off to expose bare metal. This is the step that converts guesses into a scope of work.
4. Cleaning. The National Park Service recommends a fine stainless steel wire brush for historic ironwork, noting that heavy corded or twisted wire brushes are too aggressive and can remove too much material. Sandblasting is not recommended, since it over-cleans and takes original metal with it. Surfaces are then washed with a solvent or a non-ionic detergent.
5. Repairs. Bent elements are straightened. Broken sections are forged, spliced, or riveted back together in kind. Pitted and rotted areas are rebuilt to restore the profile, which at The Admaston meant sanding out the pitting and metal-filling the worn areas, so the iron carried its original line again.
6. Rust treatment. A rust converter chemically changes remaining iron oxide into a more stable compound. Some residual rust is expected at this stage; the goal is stabilization, not a surgically clean surface.
7. Priming and finishing. An oil-based primer made for metal goes on by brush rather than spray, which avoids overspray and staining on adjacent masonry. 8. Reinstallation. Embedments get reset and detailed so water drains away from the iron instead of pooling at the joint. Skipping this step guarantees the same failure returns.

When a Historic Railing Does Not Meet Code
Interior stair and balcony railings in older buildings are often lower than current building code allows. That does not automatically mean the railing is lost.
The National Park Service bulletin on modifying historic interior railings to meet building code starts with talking to code officials about a variance. Where a variance is not available, it shows compatible ways to add height instead of replacing the historic assembly. In one example, an obtrusive proposed railing was replaced with a refined supplemental rail using two much thinner rails on finial-capped posts. In another, a simple piece of structural glass was secured to the top of a 1924 mezzanine rail, adding height while staying nearly invisible above the historic balustrade.
The principle holds generally: add the code-required element as a distinct, reversible layer, and leave the historic ironwork intact underneath.
What Gets Replaced, and What Should Not
Replacement is a real option in specific cases, and pretending otherwise costs clients money.
A section that has lost most of its structural material, or a modern addition with no historic value, is a candidate for replacement in kind. Missing ornament gets replicated from a surviving example on the same building, which is why we cast from originals whenever one exists.
Substitute materials, meaning aluminum or fiberglass standing in for iron, are a narrower case. The National Park Service addresses the conditions for that in Preservation Brief 16, and on a designated building it is a decision to make with the reviewing agency, not on the sidewalk. Keeping Restored Ironwork Restored
Restoration resets the clock. Maintenance is what keeps it reset.
Inspect the iron annually, paying attention to embedments, joints, and the underside of rails where water sits. Touch up chips and scratches before they open a path to bare metal, since a coating only works where it is continuous. Keep drainage clear, so water leaves the assembly instead of standing in it.
