Re-Plating vs. Refinishing

Not everything needs plating. If the original plating is intact and simply dull or tarnished, polishing and re-lacquering costs less and preserves more of the original surface. Re-plating is the answer when the plating has worn through to the base metal. We tell you which one your pieces actually need after inspection rather than defaulting to the bigger job.

We are the shop the New York Yankees and Skanska hired to restore the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig plaques displayed at Babe Ruth Plaza and the Bronx County Courthouse, and our client list includes the Bronx Zoo. It usually depends on the building’s period and what the piece originally was. Prewar and Art Deco buildings often had nickel or chrome where people now assume brass. We identify the original finish before recommending one.

Is plating done on-site or in your shop?

In the shop. Plating requires tanks, controlled chemistry, and proper handling, so pieces are collected, plated in Mount Vernon, and returned finished.

Can you re-plate antique or heirloom pieces?

Yes, and we inspect first. Sometimes the right advice on an antique is to polish rather than re-plate, because stripping the original surface removes part of what makes the piece worth keeping.
