The Staircase Is the Job

Anyone who has moved furniture into a Hoboken walk-up knows what is coming. The staircases are narrow, they turn, and a cast iron radiator is an unforgiving shape. This is the part of the work that goes wrong when it is attempted casually, and the damage is usually to the stairs and the plaster rather than the radiator. We drain them first, which removes a surprising amount of the weight, and move them with the right equipment and enough people.

Ground Floors, Water and Rust

Hoboken’s flooding history shows up in its radiators. Ground-floor and garden-level units that took water have radiators with rust patterns you do not see upstairs, particularly around the feet and the lower sections. What Radiator Restoration Involves

Once the radiator reaches the shop it is stripped to bare iron, cleaned and inspected. Stripping is also how we find out what a flooded radiator is really like underneath. Sound castings are repaired where they need it, cracked sections and failed joints are assessed honestly, and anything past economic repair is called as such. Then you pick a finish, from solid color to hand polishing.

How does this work if your shop is in New York?

The same way it works anywhere else: we collect. The radiators are drained, disconnected and taken to our shop in Mount Vernon, restored, and delivered back for reinstallation. The bridge crossing is our problem, not yours, and nothing is shipped or freighted.

Can you actually get a radiator down my staircase?

Yes. Drained and handled properly, a radiator is heavy and awkward rather than impossible, and narrow turning staircases are normal for this work. Protecting the stairs and walls on the way through is part of the job.

My radiator was in a flood. Is it worth restoring?

Often yes. Water damage on cast iron is usually surface rust that comes off in stripping, leaving sound metal. We will look at the feet and the joints, which is where genuine damage shows, and tell you before you commit.

Should I be worried about lead paint in my apartment?

It is a fair worry and it is the reason we do not strip on site. The radiators leave, the paint comes off under controlled conditions at the shop, and they come back finished.

I only have two radiators. Is that too small a job?

No. Single-apartment work is routine.

What finishes can I choose?

Solid colors, bronze and metallic finishes, period-appropriate looks, or hand polishing, which we do in-house.
