Metal Man Restoration is based in Mount Vernon, which makes Westchester our own backyard. Most radiator work we do for Manhattan and the Bronx involves trucking several hundred pounds of cast iron over a bridge. From Westchester it is a short drive. What Is Actually in a Westchester House

The housing stock here is different from the boroughs, and so are the radiators. Tudor revivals in Bronxville, Scarsdale and Larchmont. Colonials and Victorians in Rye, Pelham and the river towns. Large prewar apartment buildings in Yonkers, New Rochelle and White Plains. What comes out of them ranges from plain three-column units to ornate cast work whose detail has been buried under sixty or seventy years of paint. In most cases the casting underneath is in better condition than the surface suggests, which is why replacing it is usually the wrong instinct.

A homeowner has an advantage a co-op owner does not: you can turn the heat off and do every radiator in the house at once. From spring through early autumn the system is down anyway. We take the radiators out, restore them as a set so the finish is consistent from room to room, and have them back and reconnected before the weather turns. Booking in spring also means you are not competing for shop time in October, when everyone remembers their radiators at the same moment.

What Radiator Restoration Involves

Each radiator is stripped completely, cleaned, and inspected before anything else happens. Surface rust is dealt with, the casting detail is brought back, and cracked sections or broken feet are repaired where repair is the honest answer. If a radiator is past economic repair we will say so rather than take the job. The finish is yours to choose: a solid color, a bronze or metallic look, a period-correct finish, or hand polishing, which we do in-house.

Can you collect radiators from my house?

Yes. Our shop is in Mount Vernon, so most of Westchester is a short drive. We disconnect and remove the radiators, restore them at the shop, and bring them back for reinstallation. Nothing is shipped or crated.

Can you do every radiator in the house at once?

Yes, and for a single-family house it is usually the better way. Doing them as a set means the finish matches across every room, and the house only goes through the disruption once.

When is the best time of year to do this?

Between heating seasons. Once the system is off for the summer the radiators can come out without leaving anyone cold, and the work is finished well before the first cold night. Spring booking also means you are not competing for shop time in October.

How long will my radiators be gone?

It depends on how many there are and the finish you choose. We give you a schedule before we collect anything, so you know the dates rather than guessing.

Is it safe if there is old lead paint and children in the house?

This is exactly why the work belongs in a shop. Radiators from this era are often coated in lead-based paint, and stripping them properly is not something that should happen in an occupied home. The radiators leave, the paint comes off under controlled conditions, and they come back finished.

Do you work with contractors, architects and designers?
