Stamford is really two radiator markets in one city. There are the prewar buildings and converted apartments near downtown, and there are the houses out in Shippan, Glenbrook, Springdale and North Stamford, many of them early twentieth century and still on their original steam. Metal Man Restoration handles both, collecting the radiators, stripping them to bare iron at our shop, and returning them repaired and refinished.
Buildings and Boards
In a prewar building the first question is rarely about finishes. It is who decides. Depending on the building and the lease, a radiator may be the unit owner’s or the building’s, and that determines whether you are arranging one apartment or the managing agent is arranging a project. We quote either. For a building we work in phases so the whole place is not without heat at once, which matters if the schedule runs toward the season.

Houses That Have Had Three Owners and Six Paint Jobs
The single-family stock here is the opposite problem: no board, no approvals, and usually decades of accumulated coats applied by successive owners with a brush and good intentions. Under them the castings are generally sound. Cast iron does not tire the way a modern panel radiator does, and a radiator that looks beyond saving is usually just badly painted rather than actually failing.
What Radiator Restoration Involves
The radiator is stripped completely, cleaned and inspected before a finish is chosen. Surface rust comes off, the casting detail reappears, and damage is repaired where repair makes sense: cracked sections and leaking joints are the real failures, and both are often fixable. If a radiator is genuinely finished we tell you instead of taking the job. You then choose the finish, up to and including hand polishing.

Timing It Around the Heating Season
The comfortable window is spring through early autumn, when the system is down and a radiator can be away without anyone noticing. Booking early in that window also avoids the autumn rush, when everybody remembers their radiators at the same moment and shop time gets tight.
Part of a Larger Restoration Shop
Radiators are one part of what the shop does. The same benches handle bronze and brass entrances, steel casement windows, lighting and hardware. See our radiator restoration service, or the rest of our metal restoration work.
Common Questions About Radiator Restoration in Stamford
What Stamford owners ask us most before booking.
Your shop is in New York. Is that a problem?
No. Mount Vernon is a straight run down I-95 and we are in Stamford regularly enough that it is an ordinary trip. We collect the radiators, restore them at the shop, and deliver them back. You are not arranging transport and nothing is shipped.
I am in a condo or co-op. Whose radiator is it?
That depends on your building’s governing documents, so check with your board or managing agent before scheduling. We are happy to talk to a managing agent directly, and we quote building-wide work as readily as a single unit.
Can a radiator this far gone actually be saved?
Usually. Thick paint and surface rust look far worse than they are. What genuinely ends a radiator is a cracked section or a failed joint, and even those are often repairable. We will tell you plainly if one is past economic repair.
How long will the radiators be out of the house?
It depends on how many there are and the finish chosen. You get a collection date and a return date before anything is disconnected, rather than an estimate that drifts.
Do you do just one radiator?
Yes. A single radiator for one renovated room is a normal job, and we can match an existing finish elsewhere in the house.
What finishes are available?
Solid colors, bronze and metallic finishes, period-appropriate looks, or hand polishing. All are heat-safe finishes intended for radiators rather than ordinary paint.
